If you’ve ever dreamed of growing your own natural sponges — now’s your chance! We’re so excited to announce that Freshcoln Farms is now offering luffa gourd seeds in convenient four-packs, ready for planting.
These amazing plants aren’t just fascinating to grow — they’re incredibly useful around the home and farm too!

Why Grow Luffa?
Most people are surprised to learn that true luffa sponges don’t come from the ocean — they come from a plant! Luffas (or “loofahs”) are part of the gourd family, and once fully matured and dried, they can be used for a variety of household tasks.
On our farm, we love using luffa sponges for:
Washing farm-fresh eggs
Scrubbing dishes without harsh chemicals
Exfoliating skin naturally for a refreshing, chemical-free clean
Eco-friendly cleaning around the house
These natural sponges are tough enough to clean but gentle enough for your skin — and the best part is, you can grow your own supply right in your backyard!
How to Grow Luffa Gourds
Growing luffa gourds is a fun, rewarding project for gardeners of all levels. Here’s a quick guide to get you started:
1. Start Seeds Early
Luffas need a long growing season — about 150-200 warm days. In colder regions like ours in South Jersey, it’s best to start seeds indoors 4–6 weeks before your last frost date. Plant seeds in deep pots (like 4” pots) because luffas grow strong taproots early on. Or start the season on the right foot by grabbing a 4-pack from our farm this season!
2. Warmth is Key
Luffas love heat! Keep seedlings warm (at least 70°F+) and provide good light. Once all danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed up, you can transplant them outdoors.
3. Provide Support
Luffa vines are vigorous climbers! Plant them where they can climb a trellis, fence, or sturdy support. Giving them room to sprawl vertically helps the fruits stay clean and healthy.
4. Patience Pays Off
It takes time, but around late summer to early fall, you’ll see the luffa fruits mature. You’ll want to leave the gourds on the vine until the skin turns brown and begins to dry out.
5. Harvest and Peel
When the luffas feel lightweight and rattle a little when shaken, they’re ready to harvest! Peel off the skin, shake out the seeds for next year, and rinse your new sponge clean.
